On March 24th, 2018, Rep. Ryan Costello, R-Pa., announced that he would not seek re-election this November. Costello's seat is up for grabs between Chrissy Houlahan(D) and Greg McCauley(R). The debate between Ms. Houlahan and Mr. McCauley took place at the Henrietta Hankin Library in Chester Springs, PA on October 13, 2018.

Debate Topics...

Through the debate, the topics of Social Security, minimum wage, Medicare, national debt, gun control, and opioids were discussed. But the single most asked questions focused on immigration and border security. The topic is timely since the news of yet another migrant caravan heading to the US.

The result of the 2016 election made it clear that the American people placed priorities in immigration laws and border security. At the debate on October 13th, this topic was placed at the forefront several times. Greg McCauley placed a strong emphasis on immigration where he outlined his unique immigration plan. In addition, his stance on border security was strong. THREATCORE PROJECT has compiled some quotes from the debate.

Greg McCauley on Opioids...

"Philadelphia has the most pure heroin in the entire country — we're ground zero."

"We need to secure our borders and keep heroin out and stop human trafficking going both ways."

Greg McCauley Immigration...

"We have 22 to 25 million undocumented visitors in our country right now. In my plan they will not become citizens or have a right to vote."

"Those 25 million will apply and pay for a visa and they'll be allowed to work here. It'll be the first time in 50 years that we know who's here, where they live, and where they work. And now for the best part — they're going to start to pay taxes. Their employers are going to collect it, and they're going to remit it, and the visitors are going to file tax returns on top. This is going to bring 50 to 100 billion dollars into our economy every year. This is how we're going to help Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, and don't think that these are all minimum wage workers — there are a lot of sophisticated people here on contracts making between two and five hundred thousand dollars a year and we're going to make sure that they pay too."

Greg McCauley on Border Security...

"In parts probably from California over to Tijuana, especially, we need a wall. Right now you've seen it on TV hopping over with big backpacks. They're not bringing pot, ok? It's legal on the other side. That's heroine and fentanyl and it's killing 64,000 Americans every year. So we need to tighten these borders up. Do we need a wall for 2,000 miles? Probably not. There are some mountains in the way. There's some open desert areas that we can monitor. So we don't need a wall everywhere, but there are parts where we definitely need a wall."

"Open borders would be a huge mistake."

Greg McCauley on Sanctuary Cities...

"I find it wholly unfair that someone undocumented is protected in the city for the crimes they committed, when you're not."

"So I totally disagree with cities being sanctuaries for criminals."

"And I am totally for defunding those cities with federal funds."

Greg McCauley on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)...

"We need ICE to protect us."

"I'd like to see the border secure."

"I believe in securing our borders."

"I would like to see the heroin and fentanyl stopped."

Greg McCauley on Conservative Values...

"I like small government, not large government."

"We need to start to respect each other. I met my wife 37 years ago; I still open her car door. Why? Respect."

Mr. McCauley went on the talk about the link to healthcare and shootings: "The vast majority of the shooters have had serious mental health issues."

"That's where our healthcare system can start to work, right in mental health."

"I don't know that is is just a Federal issue. Shouldn't the states already be on this?"

"Single payer [healthcare] is not going to work."

In his opening statement, Greg McCauley said that he is not a politician, he never has been, and never will be. McCauley, however, has seen these issues as a need to run for office and knocked on over 7,000 doors in the region to get his name on the ballot. His message to the people of Pennsylvania's 6th Congressional District is clear — a strong economy, tough on immigration, border security, and addressing the opioid crisis in our region. Be sure to get out and vote on November 6th.
